Volvo EM90: The Electric Minivan of the Future!

The 2024 Volvo EM90 emerges as the Swedish brand’s latest entry into the electric minivan segment. Promising to blend space, comfort, technology, and sustainability, the vehicle was unveiled in China, where its initial launch will take place. Utilizing the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform, developed by the Geely group, which controls Volvo, the EM90 offers modularity and scalability, catering to everything from compact vehicles to commercial ones. Additionally, the platform supports various engine configurations, battery types, drivetrains, 400V and 800V architectures, fast charging, and impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in as little as three seconds¹.

Design:

Inspired by the electric SUV EX90, scheduled for release in 2024, the Volvo EM90’s design follows the brand’s characteristic visual language. Its elongated body, measuring 5.209 meters (approximately 17 feet) in length, 2.024 meters (approximately 6.6 feet) in width, 1.867 meters (approximately 6.1 feet) in height, and with a wheelbase of 3.205 meters² (approximately 10.5 feet), stands out with its T-shaped LED headlights and illuminated logo at the front. The rear is marked by eye-catching vertical taillights, while the 22-inch wheels feature an exclusive design.

Interior:

The luxurious and spacious interior of the Volvo EM90 accommodates six or seven occupants, depending on the seating configuration. The minimalist dashboard includes a 15-inch touchscreen for the multimedia system, another 12.3-inch screen for the instrument cluster, and an additional 9-inch display for climate control and other functions. With high-quality finishes, including leather, wood, and aluminum, the EM90 also offers a panoramic roof with ambient lighting.

Technology and Safety:

Equipped with an advanced set of external sensors, including radars, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and LiDAR technology, the EM90 offers a driver assistance system. This system allows the vehicle to stay in its lane, adapt speed and distance to traffic, control speed on steep curves, and provide lane-change support. Additionally, the system can detect driver inattentiveness and, if necessary, stop the vehicle on the road³.

Performance:

The single rear electric motor of the Volvo EM90 delivers 272 horsepower. Details regarding battery capacity and range have not yet been disclosed, but there are expectations of future versions with dual or triple motors, all-wheel drive, and increased power, following the pattern established by the Zeekr 009 model, also based on the SEA platform².

Future Outlook:

The Volvo EM90 represents the forefront of electric mobility and safety for Volvo, aligning with the ambition to become an all-electric brand by 2030. Scheduled for launch in China in November 2023, there is no information about its arrival in other markets or its pricing, but it is expected to exceed that of the current top-tier SUV, the XC90.

Comandos Volvo EM90

Combining innovation, luxury, and environmental commitment, the Volvo EM90 promises to be a milestone in the evolution of electric vehicles, consolidating the Swedish brand’s futuristic vision.
