What the Leapmotor D19 is and why it matters

The Leapmotor D19 is a large SUV (≈ 5.2 m) that targets premium rivals like the BMW X7 and Mercedes‑Maybach GLS. Visually, it stands out for the chrome trim surrounding the windows and the lighting signature with slim DRLs at the front and an LED bar at the rear — details that evoke European luxury models.

Technology, range, and powertrain options

The D19 will be offered in two versions: fully electric (BEV) and range‑extender. Sources point to a CLTC range above 630 km in the electric version and more than 1,300 km combining charging and refueling in the range‑extender variant. In terms of electronics, the SUV is expected to feature:

  • Infotainment and ADAS platform supported by dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chipsets;
  • A roof with LiDAR and an advanced suite of sensors for driver assistance;
  • Digital cabin with a passenger‑dedicated display and premium materials.

Price, positioning, and competition

The most striking aspect is the price: estimated between ¥250,000 and ¥300,000, i.e., close to what consumers pay for a Toyota RAV4 in some markets — hence the headline comparing the D19’s price to that of a RAV4. Even so, the D19 won’t be the cheapest in the segment: the Geely Galaxy M9 currently has more aggressive pricing.

To understand Leapmotor’s expansion and its recent releases, also check out the compact Leapmotor Lafa 5, which showcases the brand’s strategy of targeting different segments with competitive products.

“The D19 positions Leapmotor as a serious contender to compete in the premium SUV segment with technology at an affordable price.”

Additionally, the technological arms race in the sector — including its parent company Stellantis — points to investments in batteries and fast charging that could benefit future models: see the fast-charging battery initiative from Stellantis.

The global launch is set for October 16, and if the figures and equipment are confirmed, the Leapmotor D19 could become a benchmark for value for those seeking space, range, and technology with a luxury look — especially outside Europe, where large SUV prices are higher.
