Electric mobility is an increasingly strong trend in the automotive world, but it still faces some challenges, such as battery range and charging time. With this in mind, Polestar, a Swedish brand owned by Volvo, partnered with StoreDot, an Israeli startup, to utilize their ultra-fast charging system. This technology allows batteries to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 10 minutes, which could be a major advantage for electric vehicles.
How does StoreDot’s technology work?
StoreDot uses silicon instead of graphite in its batteries, which can be charged over 1,000 times with minimal degradation. Charging stations need to be upgraded to deliver at least 350 kilowatts, which is more than most electrical grids can currently support. StoreDot has already demonstrated its technology in drones, scooters, and cell phones, and now aims to apply it to cars.
When will we see this technology on the roads?
Polestar and StoreDot plan to unveil a prototype with the new technology next year, in 2024. Full deployment in production vehicles on the streets is expected only in 2027, as some challenges remain to be overcome, such as cost, weight, and battery safety. StoreDot already has around 15 partnering brands, including Volvo and Daimler, that are interested in adopting their technology.
Why is this partnership important?
The partnership between Polestar and StoreDot is a significant step toward accelerating the transition to electric mobility, which offers environmental and economic benefits. By reducing charging time and increasing battery range, StoreDot’s technology can eliminate one of the main barriers to electric vehicle adoption: range anxiety. Additionally, StoreDot’s technology can improve battery circularity, as they can be reused or recycled more easily.
Polestar is a brand known for its innovation and sustainability, and StoreDot is a company at the forefront of developing fast-charging batteries. Together, they can contribute to the revolution of electric mobility by providing practical and efficient solutions for consumers and the planet.
