The Ligier JS50 has been updated for 2025 with an unusual approach that goes against the market trend: a new diesel engine called REVO D+. Certified under Euro 5+ standards, this 499.8 cm³ engine promises to be ultra-quiet with minimal vibrations, a bold claim for a small diesel engine. The brand bets on efficiency and practicality to justify its choice, challenging the dominance of electric vehicles.
The biggest strengths of the diesel Ligier JS50 lie in its pragmatism. The manufacturer states an average fuel consumption of only 3.0 liters per 62 miles, resulting in an impressive range exceeding 310 miles with its 4.5-gallon tank. Beyond fuel economy, the microcar surprises with a trunk capacity of 16.6 cubic feet, larger than many compact hatchbacks, and a modern interior featuring a 10-inch multimedia center with full connectivity.
However, the concept has limitations in performance and cost. Classified as a light quadricycle (L6), its top speed is 28 mph, and in many European countries, it can be driven from age 14 with an AM license. The starting price of €15,200 in Germany raises questions about its cost-effectiveness, positioning it as a niche solution for restricted urban mobility rather than a competitor to conventional entry-level cars.
